Shivers symptom list

PostWed Jul 20, 2016 9:55 am

Here's a list of symptoms I have experienced with my gelding and that I've seen online - add yours!

Age of onset:
"Most horses with Shivers begin to show signs before 5 years of age, and the majority of cases (74% of horses surveyed in a recent study) are progressive in severity." (source: Valberg, link below)

Symptoms:
Difficulty picking up feet - cannot bend front knees, picks up hind feet very high and needs to put them down after a few seconds.
Goes into a rigid, splayed stance when stepping onto concrete at times, with legs out and tail up
Tics - head pointed upwards as if stretching. Muzzle touched to chest repeatedly.
Difficulty backing up
Displays all these issues when stressed - if he spooks he goes rigid and legs splay

Other issues that look a bit like shivers:
Stringhalt
Upward fixation of the patella
Fibrotic myopathy
“Stiff-horse syndrome” (SHS
Equine motor neuron disease (EMND)
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM)

More info an a video of shivers horses can be seen here: https://cvm.msu.edu/research/faculty-research/valberg-laboratory/information-on-shivers
